SYDNEY, Jan 2 Asia Pulse - The Australian shares opened weaker on the first trading day of the year, in line Wall Street's downbeat ending for 2001.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index had fallen 6.7 points to 3415.6 by 1014 AEDT while the all ordinaries dipped 2.9 points to 3357.0.
The all resources index dropped 2.7 points to 1550.2 and the all industrials slipped 5.6 points to 5746.9.
On the Sydney Futures Exchange, the March share price index contract gained three points to 3420.0 - a 4.4 point premium to the underlying index - on a volume of 1,164 contracts.
