A roadside emergency can happen anywhere, any time. That's why it pays to keep a reasonable amount of gear in the car to cope with broken belts, flats, and other breakdowns. You don't have to carry everything listed here all the time-just the items for everyday driving around town. Add appropriate gear when you get ready for winter or embark on a long trip. Check out "Auto Parts" (page 53), our new column about autos, for the lowdown on portable battery boosters.
In an emergency, follow these steps:
* Get off the road.
* Make your vehicle as visible as possible. Turn on the vehicle's hazard lights and display any warning signals.
* If you need police help, raise the hood or tie a white cloth to the radio antenna or door handle.
* Get out of the vehicle only if it's safe. If you are on a busy highway, exit on the passenger side.
* If you must wait inside the vehicle, keep the doors locked and the safety belt fastened.
