The redesigned Camry remains a comfortable, refined, and quiet sedan that offers a pleasant driving experience. Although different in character, it ranks with the Passat as the top-scoring model in this category. Access is easy, and the controls are intuitive. Its comfort, room, and quietness suggest a larger, more expensive car. The new four-cylinder engine is particularly smooth and refined, and the promise of top-notch reliability is another plus. But braking doesn't quite match the Passat's or Accord's.
THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The Camry mutes road bumps well and cruises serenely. The steering has improved slightly. It's quick and precise, though it still feels a tad too light. Body roll is a bit pronounced. The Camry proved predictable and secure during tight turns at our track. It negotiated our avoidance maneuver reasonably well, but weak tire grip limited its performance.
The new-generation 157-hp, 2.4-liter Four with variable valve timing is smooth and responsive, but it didn't quite match the Passat's or Altima's zippy acceleration. Expect 24 mpg in mixed driving on regular fuel--the highest in this group. A smooth, quiet 192-hp V6 is optional. Both engines qualify the Camry as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV). The four-speed automatic is smooth and responsive; a five-speed manual is standard on the Four. Braking was very good, but not as good as the old Camry's. Stops were a little longer, and the pedal felt spongy.
INSIDE THE CAR
The interior, while bland, has a substantial, quality feel with excellent fit and finish. A fully powered driver seat and height-adjustable wheel help provide a good driving position for most. But lack of a telescopic wheel put the pedals too close or the wheel too far away for some testers.
The front seats are comfortable, but could use more contouring and thigh support. The rear bench is comfortable and roomy for two adults but less so for three. Getting in and out is easy, front or rear.
