Q: How many Episcopalians does it take to change a light bulb?
A: The entire congregation--one to propose that the bulb be changed while the others debate until the room spins.
An August poll by the Washington Post found that the Episcopal church's recent decision to bless same-sex couples is opposed by 60 percent of all Americans. Among frequent churchgoers, 75 percent said they would object if their own church made such a decision. Only 37 percent of all Americans said they would support a law that allowed gay couples to form civil unions. That is a 12-point drop since May 2003.
But that decision and the election of an openly gay bishop weren't the only significant judgments to emerge from the recent General Convention of the Episcopal church. There was also a declaration on the subject of stem cell research.
