Survey research carried out by Mark Penn, Bill Clinton's pollster, brought gloomy news last month for the Democrats. Just 22 percent of white men now call themselves Democrats, Penn reported. Democrats trail Republicans among all Americans who earn more than $20,000 per year. "The Democratic Party is currently in its weakest position since the dawn of the New Deal," he summarized.

This meshes with the recently released Annual National Hispanic Survey. According to poll director Raul Damas, it showed "that Latinos are more conservative in their policy beliefs than conventional wisdom would have us believe." Some findings:
