Fischer played only 15 games last season because of a knee injury that required reconstructive surgery. This season, as he works his way back, Fischer is under pressure to be the big man on the blue line after the Red Wings lost Derian Hatcher (knee) for four to six months.

STRENGHTS Fischer is a big guy, but unlike some tall players, he doesn't look uncoordinated. He quickly gets to full speed and uses his long legs and long strides to his advantage. His long reach and confidence with the puck are other pluses. He can handle a lot of ice time, especially on the penalty kill and power play. This season, he has put some big hits on opponents, which is what the Wings want him to do, particularly with Hatcher out. Fischer also has an offensive upside, even if he doesn't get a lot of points.
