For the star-crossed, the under-funded and--lately--for the older generation, the optimism of a new season fades with each passing race. The elation and anticipation produced by January testing deteriorates into disappointment and frustration.
Every Winston Cup driver believes he can win. If he didn't, he'd have no business strapping into a racecar. But it doesn't take long for reality to deliver its stern message.
Veteran drivers Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd and Rusty Wallace were expected to grace victory lane at least once during the year. So far this season, they haven't. And now there are just three races left.
