The Yankees want to keep free-agent lefthander Andy Pettitte. The question is whether Pettitte wants to stay.
Pettitte, 31, has spoken of his desire to live closer to his wife and three children in the Houston suburb of Deer Park, Texas. The retirement of his mentor, Roger Clemens, and the possible departure of pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre could further motivate him to leave the Yankees. But no other, team is likely to offer him as rich a contract.
In a depressed market, Pettitte might not get the six-year, $88.5 million free-agent deal that the Yankees gave Mike Mussina shortly before he turned 32. But after being paid $11.5 million this season, Pettitte almost certainly will command a minimum of three years and $13 million per season.
The Astros probably can't approach those numbers unless they trade closer Bill/Wagner and possibly right fielder Richard Hidalgo, who will make a combined $21 million next season. The Rangers, cutting payroll, don't want to sign another costly starter when they're paying Chart Ho Park $42 million over the next three years.
