STEVE McNAIR

My friend Dennis Dillon believes Dante Hall, the Chiefs' return man, has been the most valuable player in the NFL so far. On one kickoff against the Packers, Hall was blinded by the sun and missed the ball. Well, the same thing can happen to writers. Obviously.

Though Hall has been spectacular, his own teammate Priest Holmes has been more valuable. No player in the NFL has more yards from scrimmage than Holmes.

Jamal Lewis of the Ravens, the NFL's leading rusher, has been more valuable than Hall. Without him, the Ravens might not have a victory.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has been more valuable than Hall. He threw more touchdown passes in one game--six--than Hall has scored all season.

But the most valuable player in the league at the halfway point is Titans quarterback Steve McNair. No player has carried his team like McNair. Without much of a running game to fall back on, McNair leads the league in passing yards. He has made big plays (a league-high 18 passes of 25 yards or more) without making costly mistakes (only three interceptions).

McNair has thrown the ball or run it 253 times. Hall has touched the ball 70 times.
