IMAGE OF A TAOISEACH

If it is true that, as Shakespeare once wrote, "apparel oft proclaim the man", then perhaps Bertie Ahern should read fewer Government papers and more 16th century English playwrights.

In this modern world of soundbites and snapshots, the Bard is bang up to date as usual. A politician's image really does seem to be more important than what he or she says.

And for a leader, image is vital - as John Bruton, Michael Noonan and, just this week,Iain Duncan Smith have found to their cost. Voters are a fickle lot - they don't like their leaders with too many airs and graces but they do like their statesmen to be, well, statesmanlike.

So it is with deep concern that it has been noted among fashionistas and politicalcommentators alike that Bertie's infamous anorak made a comeback at the recentNorthern Ireland talks in Hillsborough.

Pictures showed Tony Blair braving the elements in just his suit, looking both hardy and elegant - whereas our anoraked Bertie just looked cosy and comfortable.
