(From Irish Independent)
FIVE YEARS ago, the terms of the Belfast Agreement were widely welcomed by both communities in Northern Ireland.
So wrote the Irish Times in an editorial on Wednesday, October 29. As often happenswith editorials, the statement is literally accurate but misleading, by reason of what it omits.
The Belfast Agreement was indeed welcomed by a majority in both communities in Northern Ireland. The majority in the Catholic Community was overwhelming. But theinitial majority in the Protestant community was quite small.
With practical experience of the working of the Agreement over the years, the Catholic support for the Agreement remained solidly majoritarian.
But, as a result of their own experience of the working of the Agreement, Protestantsturned away from it, so that now a solid majority of all Protestants are opposed to the Agreement.
That indeed is something of an understatement. During the present elections, there are no Protestant public representatives who favour the Agreement as it stands.
