THE landslides allegedly associated with the construction of an ESB wind farm in Galway are set to make it more difficult for the ESB to win a planning appeal for a [euro]300m wind farm in Bellacorick, Co Mayo.
The ESB and Bord na Mona are jointly proposing a 192-turbine wind farm at Bellacorickon the site of a soon-to-be-closed, peat-fired generating station.
However, locals appealed the planning permission granted by Mayo County Council in the summer. If the wind farm application is granted on appeal, it will be the largest inEurope.
But observers said last night the problems surrounding the Derrybrien landslide in Galwaywere likely to provide a boost for those arguing against the Mayo project.
If it wins the planning appeal the ESB is hoping to begin construction of the Mayo windfarm in the autumn of 2004 and finish it in 2010.
