WE'VE been hearing some of Barbie's Cradle's songs from their latest album for several months now, but we only managed to listen to the entire compilation quite recently. That's our loss, because "Playing in the Fields" (Warner Music) is a charmer of a record, something that we wish we'd discovered sooner.
Worthy follow-up
A worthy follow-up to their two previous releases, 1999's "Barbie's Cradle" and 2000's "Music from the Buffet Table," "Fields" is a refreshing collection of 10 tracks, all of which hit the right notes.
With "Playing in the Fields," the band shows us that they've got it together and that they are still going strong. The album continues in the mellow, "progressive folk" style that Barbie's Cradle has become famous for. Though short-less than 50 minutes all told-it won't leave you feeling unfulfilled.
The album pushes off with "All I Need (Is God)," which has been enjoying some airplay lately on music television. The buoyant song is an affirmation of faith.
