(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
Byline: Rafael R. Castillo, MD
SOMETIME last year, we wrote a series of articles on how air pollution was slowly killing us. The Clean Air Act has apparently not caused any significant improvement in the quality of the air in Metro Manila.
Stand anywhere on Edsa for a few minutes and you get to inhale toxic particles enough to irritate your respiratory tract. Do this regularly and you weaken your immune system. The next thing you know, you're down with all sorts of infection, especially respiratory tract infections such as acute bronchitis.
If this is repeated several times, lasting for three months in a year for two consecutive years, your condition has progressed to chronic bronchitis.
A person who suffers from acute bronchitis attacks repeatedly and is smoking heavily or is inhaling contaminated air for prolonged periods may develop chronic bronchitis.
There may be occasions when you're coughing like mad, making it impossible to sleep at night.
