(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
Byline: Queena N. Lee-Chua
MOST likely, physics is the most difficult natural science for students to grasp. Although force, motion and energy are ubiquitous, a full understanding of these concepts may elude most people. In fact the nitty-gritty of particle physics and astrophysics is still being debated until today.
A good physics textbook is a treasure. With clear expositions and logical examples, a book can mean the difference between a student who drops out in the first paragraph and one who is inspired to unlock the secrets of the universe himself or herself in the future.
Textbook writer
Thus, good textbook writers should foremost be good teachers, and Melecio S. Magno, Ph.D., was certainly one of them.
In 1969, his textbook "University Physics" (co-authored with colleagues from the University of the Philippines physics department) was published and soon became widely used in the country. He also became involved in secondary education, and greatly helped the Science Education Center (now the Institute of Science and Mathematics Education) to develop the high school textbook "Fundamentals of Physics," again used throughout the Philippines.
