IT'S A DISEASE associated with destitution and pestilence. Small wonder then that local health officials are doggedly trying to contain the spread of cholera cases in Tondo, Manila.

There are even efforts to downplay the situation, with health officials calling it a "clustering of cases" instead of an outbreak. And because "only" 29 cases have so far been confirmed through laboratory tests as cholera, health officials and local politicians would rather call all the cases gastroenteritis, and sometimes just diarrhea.

So far, the Manila city government has reported 242 cases of diarrhea/gastroenteritis from at least eight streets in Tondo. The Department of Health said 29 are confirmed cholera cases.

Cholera is preventable and treatable, yet it continues to kill. Among the Tondo cases, at least four people have died due to severe dehydration.
