OLONGAPO CITY-Relatives and supporters of toxic waste victims in Clark and Subic appealed for renewed support for the cleanup of former American bases and damage compensation when they commemorated the death of their family members on Thursday.
They lighted more than 100 candles and offered flowers for the victims of toxic waste exposure during a gathering at the bank of the Kalaklan River near the former Subic Naval Base here.
Parents and children of the victims, who died from various types of cancer, illnesses and abnormality due to exposure to US military toxic and hazardous wastes, rode on four bancas and held a fluvial parade at the Kalaklan River.
"This commemoration has been going on yearly for the last six years and will go on until justice for the victims has been won," said Jade Russel Timbas, People's Task Force for Bases Clean-up coordinator in Subic.
She said this year's activity was memorable because it allowed the victims to collectively grieve for the "utter disregard" of the toxic waste issue by President Macapagal-Arroyo and US President George W. Bush during Bush's visit.
