(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
ILAGAN, Isabela-The New People's Army disputed military reports claiming that an undetermined number of rebels were killed in a series of clashes in San Mariano town on Saturday.
In a statement sent to the Inquirer, Ka Victor Servidores, spokesperson of the NPA's Fortunato Camus Command-Cagayan Valley, said Army officials were creating a "yarn of lies" to make up for their defeat in recent clashes with rebels in the province.
On Saturday, four soldiers were killed after NPA rebels ambushed them while crossing a river in San Mariano town.
Servidores said the Army's 5th Infantry Division is "concocting fantastic statements to hide its stinging setbacks."
"These (Army casualties) show that communist guerrillas are capable of defeating the Army despite its superiority in number of soldiers," he said.
Killed in Saturday's ambush were Sgt. Marcelino Alcantara, Pvt. Alfonso Carino, one Pfc. Cabildo and Cpl. Leonardo Sedon. They belonged to the 5th ID based in Gamu town.
