THE QUEZON City council has approved on third and final reading an ordinance declaring a one-time amnesty on delinquent real property taxpayers.
The ordinance, however, may be in for a rough ride after QC Mayor Feliciano "Sonny" Belmonte expressed opposition to any move that would free inept taxpayers from paying penalties and surcharges.
He said that would be unfair to people who pay their real property taxes religiously and on time.
The ordinance, introduced by 15 councilors led by 4th district councilor Jesus Manuel Suntay, aims to ease the financial burden of people with outstanding tax liabilities.
It's key goal, however, is to generate additional revenue for the city government.
