STEPHEN Hontiveros is literally on top of the world. As president of the FIQ, the governing body for bowling, he becomes only the third Filipino to hold the highest position in a world sports body. He was inducted into the De La Salle Sports Hall of Fame last March 1. He also made it to the Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum in 1995. He will be the Chef de Mission of the Philippine contingent in the Olympic Games in Athens next year.
INQUIRER: You must be so proud of the achievements of your athletes in winning world events?
HONTIVEROS: We are very proud of the accomplishments of our bowlers. First, the women's trio not only came from behind, but they broke the world record in the process. We are equally very proud of CJ (Suarez), since he is only the second Filipino male to ever win the World Cup other than Paeng (Nepomuceno).
INQUIRER: Why has this been such a great year for the Philippines in bowling?
HONTIVEROS: We are having a great year, first of all because it is definitely a blessing from God. We also have our officers and board members of the PBC who have been working very hard for the sport.
