AMERICAN Johnny Archer, capping a sizzling show with an ace, played a Halloween trick on Filipino pool fans as he outfoxed local hero Francisco "Django" Bustamante, 13-10, to pocket the $20,000 top purse in the On Cue II: Battle of Champions last night.
Called the Scorpion for his sharp, stinging shots, the 35-year-old native of Atlanta, Georgia displayed awesome 9-ball mastery as he often left Bustamante to ponder his fate on the chair.
Up 12-10 in the race to 13, Archer sank the 9-ball on the break in the 23rd frame to the dismay of a jampacked crowd at the Robinson's Galleria in Mandaluyong City.
Archer did not only keep Bustamante at bay with his safeties, but was also unbeatable when it came to breaking and getting the right angles.
"Right at the end, I knew Django's capable of coming back. I told myself to hit a solid break at the end and it worked," said Archer after winning his sixth tournament this year. It was his first title in Manila.
