China has been hit by a series of natural disasters that has left the country with an estimated bill of $18.3bn in economic losses.
So far this year 1911 people have been killed in some of the most serious flooding since 1954. The river Huaihe was the worst affected, with flooding causing damage in east and central China in June and early July.
At the start of September the River Wei, a tributary of the Yellow River, experienced the worst flood peak in 22 years and burst its banks. Approximately 10,000 homes were destroyed and 120,000 people were evacuated. The floods inflicted substantial further damage to the area, washing away bridges, roads, buildings and power supply facilities.
The flooding also caused around 80 landslides that have added to the damage.
Since the beginning of 2003 the total damage caused by Chinese floods has been huge. A total of 2.6m houses have collapsed and 6.3m people have been evacuated. More than 50 million hectares of farmland have been affected.
