(From Reinsurance)
Byline: Vic Wyman.
Within weeks the Bermuda Insurance Management Association (Bima) might for the first time be able to reveal detailed figures about what is believed to be rapid growth on Bermuda of captive (re)insurance.
Bima has commissioned research into the island's (re)insurance market that might yield figures soon. "There's a concern that the existing statistics do not reflect the amount of business," says the Bima president Rory Gorman, of the broker Marsh.
Bermuda claims to be home to more captives than anywhere else. The Bermuda Insurance Institute says that 30% of the estimated 4000 captives worldwide are domiciled there.
However, Mr Gorman is realistic enough to suggest that the Bima survey may not extract enough information to reveal the true state of the market.
Rating agency AM Best points out that captive statistics in Bermuda are difficult to pin down because most captives have Class 3 operating licences - a category that covers both captive and non-captive entities.
