Critical illness cover (CIC) is the UK healthcare insurance success story of recent times. Having arrived with reinsurers' help in Britain from South Africa as recently as 1986, yearly sales have rapidly gone on to dwarf those of the complementary and much longer established income protection (IP) cover, which has been around since the reign of Queen Victoria.
