The blackout that left 50 million people without power in North America in August caused at least $75m in damages, according to the property claims service unit of the Insurance Services Office. The figure could increase, the company has warned. Eight US states and a large part of eastern Canada were blacked out for up to 30 hours, including the cities of New York, Ottawa, Toronto, Detroit and Cleveland. Initial investigations have pinpointed the source of the power cut to a break in a circuit in Ohio.
