Overview To many outsiders, Afghanistan may not appear strategically important compared with other major countries in the region, including Iran, Pakistan, India and Iraq. The recent turmoil in the region has often been reported on western TV and the long years of war and suffering for the Afghan people have hardly been noted until recently.
