A PROFILE OF CHINA'S TEXTILE INDUSTRY

OVERVIEW:
* China's textile industry registered steady growth in production, sales and profits in the first eight months of this year.
* In January-August, China produced 6.0554 million tons of yarn, up 18.23 per cent year on year. The output of fabrics reached 15.704 billion meters, up 8.39 per cent; that of silk products, 3.95 billion meters, up 19.93 per cent; that of garments, 6.19 billion pieces, up 11.35 per cent.
* Growth was recorded for some half of the products in the textile and garment industry, especially upstream products. The production growth of most downstream products declined but moderately.
* China's state-owned textile enterprises exported US$21.548 billion of textiles and garments in January-August, up 12.97 per cent year on year and accounting for 44.07 per cent of the country's total textile and garment exports. The exports of foreign-funded enterprises hit US$17.091 billion, up 23.80 per cent year on year and accounting for 34.96 per cent of the country's total.
