SIR - We are currently witnessing the death of the Conservative Party. In fact, political observers are currently fascinated by the Tory death throes.

They are quick to point out that, simply because there always has been a Conservative Party, this, in itself, does not mean that it will exist for ever.

This country desperately needs to do just what the French did hundreds of years ago - get rid of the monarchy and the thousands of royal hangers-on.

Britain was very, very seriously damaged by 18 years of Conservative rule that ended in 1997.
