The Cubs and Red Sox self-destructed in remarkably similar fashion, But which suffered the greater heartache?
HOW CLOSE DID THEY COME?
Cubs. They blew a 3-1 NLCS lead to the Marlins despite having their rotation lined up just right and Games 6 and 7 at home. They were within five outs of a spot in the Series when the Game 6 cave-in occurred.
Red Sox. They, too, found themselves five outs from the Series before a Yankees rally in Game 7 of the ALCS. It's big-time tough to dispose of the Yanks, so the stun factor wasn't as high.
Bigger disappointment: Cubs.
MISMANAGEMENT
Cubs. Dusty Baker trusted ace Kerry Wood to get out of a fifth-inning jam in Game 7. Wood, instead, surrendered a 2-run lead. An inning later, Baker called on his suspect bullpen rather than bring in a starter such as Matt Clement.
