Talkin' in Rhythm: The spring issue of Invention & Technology reports that the oldest talkie has been restored to viewable and listenable condition. It dates back to 1895 when Thomas Edison recorded a short film and wax cylinder simultaneously. The film has been known for years. The cylinder was found in the mid-'90s, but in pieces.
Technicians at Edison National Historic Site put the cylinder back together and made a digital recording from it. They sent that recording and a copy of the film to movie editor Walter Murch, who transferred the film to digital form, cleaned up the sound, and ...
