October 24 today marks United Nations Day. The Day is being observed at the UNECA with various activities that include highlighting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) announced by the United Nations in 2001 with the aim of reducing the number of people in the world, particularly those living in South Asia and Africa on less than one dollar per day by half by the year 2015, does not appear to be on course to achieve the set objectives.

Of all the developing regions, sub-Saharan Africa faces the greatest challenge of meeting the MDCs.
