Network Rail, the not-for-profit firm which runs Britain's rail infrastructure, announced it would take control of all maintenance contracts currently in the hands of private companies.

Network Rail said Friday that it aimed to save millions of pounds a year by taking over the contracts, while the move was being hailed as the biggest shake-up of Britain's railways since the former British Rail was privatised in 1996.
