A massive explosion rocked an area of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad Monday near the Red Cross building and thick black smoke was billowing from the area, witnesses said. At least two cars were on fire and U.S. troops were cordoning off the area.

According to witnesses, 18 people have been killed in the blast near the Red Cross base. One witness said the bomb at the Red Cross was packed in an ambulance but there was no confirmation from police.

Fire trucks and ambulances were rushing to the scene.

The huge explosion, which occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m., came one day after a rocket attack on the Al Rasheed Hotel.
