In this time of the USA Patriot Act and other legislation allowing the U.S. government to track the actions of individuals, many are concerned about protecting patrons' personally identifiable information at any cost. Some propose the solution of deleting all data from the operational databases whenever possible. However, deleting all data associated with library transactions will make it difficult to evaluate and justify library services; therefore libraries must seek a balance between protecting the privacy of patrons and maintaining a history of library transactions.
