Taiwan's mold and die makers may be in a decidedly "old-economy" business, but with a little help from the government and industry organizations they are turning into high-tech operations making high-margin products used in the most sophisticated corners of modern industry
The Taiwan Mold and Die Industry Association (TMDIA) has been leading the charge up the technological ladder by setting up a task force in charge of nurturing closer collaboration among various segments of the mold and die industry. The association is also plugging for the establishment of a design park, specialists training center, and databank for the local mold and die industry
One of these initiatives involves bringing together suppliers of molds used for making backlight panels for liquid crystal display devices, cases for desktop and notebook computers, cases for cell phones, automotive lamps, and automobile body parts
The TMDIA says the design park will be located in southern Taiwan to encourage growth of the mold and die industry in that region. Similar parks may later be added in central and northern Taiwan, the association says
