The criminal case brought against a deputy chairman of the Islamic Rebirth Party of Tajikistan (IRP), Shamsiddin Shamsiddinov, is seen as the Tajik authorities' attempt to crack down on the Islamic Party by using the fight against terrorism as a pretext. An article published by the Russian newspaper Kommersant on 9 October says that representatives of the Tajik opposition believe that President Emomali Rahmonov is using the fight against terrorism as an excuse to conclusively deprive the IRP of influence and to outlaw it once again.
