Richie Perez, former "information captain" of the Puerto Rican liberation group, the Young Lords Party, blames cops for the organization's implosion in New York City in the early 1970s. Infiltrators destroyed the group, not with legitimate arrests, but with accusatory gossip and extremist rhetoric that turned members against one other.
"Surveillance was always a prerequisite to action," said Perez, noting that cops blurred the line between watching and acting. "Agents used to go around my neighborhood and tell people we had weapons and were going to plant bombs. They'd send provocateurs into our meetings and get close to the defense and security leaders."
