MANILA, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - The Philippines is still hoping to hold another round of talks with the United States air panel despite the implementation today of the open skies policy.
Acting Foreign Affairs Secretary Franklin Ebdalin said Manila could still negotiate with the US even after the RP-US Air Transport Agreement of 1982 has taken effect.
"There's nothing that will prevent us from having another round of negotiations," Ebdalin said.
Open skies will allow American carriers unlimited access to any Philippine destination while local carriers will be restricted to nine gateways in the US.
The Philippine government remained hopeful that RP-US air liberalization will not affect the Philippines' air industry for the meantime since American air companies are losing passengers due to threats of terrorism.
Government officials believe passengers would rather choose non-American carriers because of persistent terrorist threat on US airlines following the Sept. 11 terror attacks in 2001.
Manila earlier contemplated of abrogating the 1995 Air Services Agreement (ASA) with the US to stop the open skies policy from taking effect.
