ISLAMABAD, Oct 1 Asia Pulse - Pakistan is ready to sign a framework agreement on the South Asia Free Trade Agreement (Safta) at the five-day Saarc (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) conference, scheduled to be held in Kathmandu from October 14 to 18.
However, officials in Islamabad have ruled out the possibility of any sideline meeting with their Indian counterpart at Kathmandu to discuss a bilateral trade agreement.
Senior Joint Secretary Ministry of Commerce, Zafar Iqbal Qadir, who would present Pakistan's case at the conference, told Business Recorder that Islamabad is for Safta. He said that the regional free trade arrangement would equally benefit all parties.
Zafar said: "A regional trade agreement has always been Islamabad's top priority and it would go forward with the same policy at Kathmandu."
He ruled out any meeting with his Indian counterpart at Kathmandu for any bilateral trade agreement, and said: "Pakistan is not considering any preferential trade arrangement with India."
