THE JOINT Congressional Oversight Committee on the Automation of Elections is recommending the suspension of automated elections in the 2004 polls.
The oversight committee made the recommendation due to the lack of automated counting machines procured by the Commission on Elections that would ensure a more efficient tallying of votes.
"With only 1,991 counting machines for some 38 million voters in 1,600 cities and municipalities, 42,000 barangays and 250,000 precincts, it is clear that a nationwide implementation is doomed to fail and will be counter-productive," Rep Jesli Lapus (NPC, Tarlac) said.
Lapus is the chair of the House panel in the oversight committee, with Sen. Edgardo Angara serving as his counterpart.
