THE MILITARY downgraded its alert status from red to white at six last night, hours after the President returned from a five-day working visit to the United States, France and Italy.
But military officials did not rule out the possibility that they might upgrade the alert anew, in time for US President George W. Bush's brief visit to the country on Oct. 18.
Lt. Col. Daniel Lucero, military information officer, said that the Armed Forces no longer saw the need to maintain red alert status, which was enforced on Monday last week, two days before the President's departure.
"The action of the AFP will speak for itself. There is no more need to maintain the red alert status since the situation already warrants that we downgrade the alert level status," he told reporters. "It looks like we are experiencing a relatively normal situation."
The military had expected militant groups to stage protest rallies in Metro Manila while Ms Arroyo was abroad, but this did not happen.
