TACLOBAN CITY-The cancellation of the supposed visit of US President George W. Bush in Leyte has caused disappointment not only among local officials but also members of militant groups in the province.
Leyte Gov. Remedios Petilla said the provincial government was "more than willing" to help in the preparation as well as in providing security to the American president had the visit pushed through.
"It was a sort of a disappointment... We are more than willing to give our share of the expenses ... effort in providing security to President Bush," she said.
For the militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) in Tacloban, the visit of President Bush would have given them a more dramatic venue in denouncing what they called the "continued military and economic intervention" of the United States in the country.
Don Dehayco, director of the Bayan commission for popular struggle, said the visit would have been a "perfect time" to show President Bush their opposition against US meddling in the country's affairs.
