DOES the Baguio City government still have a taste for the world's biggest tossed salad?
The local government's treatment this year of the city's annual Tossed Salad Festival has convinced many businessmen that they are no longer welcome.
Members of the Baguio Association of Hotels and Restaurants (Bahai) admitted in a press conference on Thursday that the third staging of the event had been pushed out of Baguio's Charter Day anniversary month lineup, despite its previous success as a crowd drawer during the off-peak tourist months.
The third serving of the much-touted largest tossed salad has been rescheduled on Oct. 11. It will be held in an open-air venue at the Athletic Bowl of Burnham Park, after the city government cancelled Bahai's reservation for the Baguio Convention Center. In its place, Mayor Bernardo Vergara had booked a 15-day book fair at the convention center, which was organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Inquirer was told.
Jeannine Chan, Bahai president and manager of the Mountain Lodge, said the schedule mix-up was forgivable.
But some Bahai members claimed that some city officials had resented the Bahai activity because it competed with the city government for valuable corporate sponsorships.
