LARRY Fonacier, no stranger to playing the hero's role, delivered the killer shots as title holder Ateneo subdued arch rival La Salle, 74-68, and barged into the UAAP basketball finals last night at the jampacked Araneta Coliseum.
A highly emotional crowd watched as Ateneo and La Salle fought furiously, but in the end it was Fonacier, in tandem with slotman Paolo Bugia, who spoiled the Archers' bid to author one of the league's stunning reversals.
The 6-foot-6 Bugia, back after a career-threatening knee injury he suffered last year, completed a three-point play off rookie Jerwin Gaco, 67-62, and Fonacier, free from Jun Jun Cabatu's menacing presence, answered a Gaco split with an 18-footer, 69-63, 1:01 remaining.
Fonacier, a former junior MVP, added a magic touch to the tension-filled situation, when he calmly sank four straight free throws which finally dashed the Archers' hopes, 73-68, 13 seconds left.
"I'm speechless and I'm glad its over,' said a visibly relieved Ateneo coach Joel Banal. "It's always down the wire whenever we meet La Salle."
