The Ministry of Information and Communication yesterday unveiled a plan to help small enterprises purchase computers and digital infrastructure, a move aimed at helping them better utilize the country's high-speed Internet and e-commerce facilities.
The ministry said corporate productivity has been improving thanks to the government-led programs to help small- and medium-sized enterprises exploit the Internet and digital infrastructure.
The country's e-commerce transactions were worth 177 trillion won ($154 billion) in 2002, helped by the trend in favor of electronic business.
But the ministry said only 25 percent of about 3 million small enterprises with less than 50 employees have adopted information technology. The ministry said the country is now nowhere close to completing the "informatization" of smaller companies. But smaller firms are increasingly reluctant to invest in information technology amid the protracted economic downturn and growing uncertainty about the business environment.
The Information Ministry said its new plan would focus on ASP, or application service provider. Unlike other packages, ASP software solutions offer information technology services at far lower costs, the ministry claimed.
