(From The Korea Herald)
By Yang Sung-jin SK Telecom, the country's largest mobile carrier, said yesterday that it has successfully completed a wireless data roaming test between Korea and China, marking a major step forward in the company's efforts to enter the Chinese mobile service market.
SK Telecom said the new roaming test has been conducted in Beijing, Shanghai and other major Chinese cities.
The company said its subscribers will be able to use all mobile data services from China before the end of October. Voice phone roaming service in China is already available for SK Telecom subscribers.
The Korea-China data roaming service has been made possible through SK Telecom's partnership with China Unicom. The Chinese carrier runs a cdma2000 1x network, which in turn authenticates the roaming handsets before linking them with SK Telecom's wireless Internet portal, Nate.com.
"As soon as network optimization and billing details are resolved, Nate.com services such as news, weather, mail, ring tone downloads and stock quotes will be fully available in China," SK Telecom said.
The company stressed that camera phone users can take photos in China and instantly send them to their friends in Korea via multimedia messages. Business travelers, meanwhile, can check their e-mail messages through SMS notification.
