By Kim Sung-mi Business leaders and experts from Korea and Japan yesterday called for an early conclusion of a bilateral free-trade agreement between the two neighbors.
They also urged their governments to work out measures to prevent possible side effects of the planned FTA stemming from the gap between in the two countries in terms of economic power and industrial technology.
The statement came out of a seminar on the topic of the FTA organized in Seoul by the Federation of Korean Industries and the Japanese Federation of Economic Organizations.
The two business associations agreed to set up a bilateral cooperation committee to speed up the proposed trade pact and discuss ways to make the FTA mutually beneficial to the two economies.
The experts said that an FTA with Japan would be necessary for Korea to grow into the Northeast Asian business hub.
