By Choe Yong-shik U.S. Forces Korea Commander Gen. Leon LaPorte expressed his optimism yesterday over Korea stepping up and accepting a greater responsibility in post-war Iraq in consideration of Korea's military capability.
"Korea is one of the few countries in the world having the military capability (to be able to help the United States)," the general said, implying that Korea is capable of sending combat troops to Iraq as requested.
"But it is for the Korean government and people to decide on the troop dispatch matter," he said during a brief press meeting after attending the ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty between the two allies at the Yongsan Garrison army base.
In addition, the U.S. general took the impromptu press meeting as an opportunity to clarify the U.S. position regarding some local media reports that argued the U.S. side is in need of some 5,000 Korean Marine Corps soldiers.
