By Lee Joo-hee Relations between the Millennium Democratic Party and its breakaway group are deteriorating after President Roh Moo-hyun departed from the MDP on Monday.
While Roh held his MDP membership there was a high likelihood of the two political groups cooperating to promote policies or campaigns for next year's general elections.
But MDP sources said Roh's severing ties with the MDP erased what little possibility there was for the two groups to work together. The new group loyal to Roh made no secret of their intention to join forces with the MDP later on, but the MDP seems to have become more bitter towards the president's reform policy since he turned his back on them, political analysts said.
The disgruntled MDP challenged Roh's authority and put forward the idea of adopting a new system transferring some of the president's power to the prime minister.
"Unless we adopt a new system soon, one that divides administrative power between the president and the prime minister, conflicts and confusion between the emperor-like president and the National Assembly will persist," MDP Chairman Rep. Park Sang-cheon said yesterday after a meeting with party executives.
The MDP also openly criticized the idea of a parliamentary probe suggested by the new group ostensibly to earn the MDP's support.
