VENICE -- The search for a new manager for the city's airport will miss the Oct. 1 hiring date set in the spring by City Manager George Hunt.

According to Hunt, Internet postings of the job generated more applicants than expected.

"The number of applicants overwhelmed us, and we had a lot more to deal with than we anticipated," Hunt said Monday. "It took us quite a while to zip them down to a final group."

It has taken a review panel almost four months to collect and whittle down 184 resumes to 16 candidates for the job, which pays a starting salary of as much as $60,000.
